OBSERVATIONS FROM INSIDE ANIMAL CRUELTY CASES
What’s it like taking animals seized by a search warrant for the State Police?
It is a great collaboration except for two BIG THINGS!. There are no protections for the impounding organization (the rescue). The rescue group, its officers, foster homes and vendors are often targets for the defendant to post vicious, slanderous posts on social media. And although this is the State Police’s evidence, with which the rescue is kindly holding, there are no funds furnished by the State Police to carry their case, that can literally go on for months, even years.
Who decides to remove the animals?
The Veterinarian(s) on scene makes the determination if there is a violation of the animal welfare laws and subsequent seizure.
What can be improved so that organizations can take these large animals and not be targeted?
CHANGE THE LAWS!!
The laws need to be changed to protect the impounding organizations and the Police need to have a fund for animal cruelty cases; they have funds for other cases.
